The season was 2011-12. Manchester United on a ride downhill.
Injuries had only compounded salt to the wound. Ferguson's favoured formation of 4-4-2 was not materialising with the duo of Cleverly and Anderson in the midfield.
The gap between the midfield and defence could see a daylight broader than the English channel. The whole pre-assumed plot was backfiring. The attacking mindset of Cleverly/Anderson was in the mix with the diminshing pace of Vidic and Ferdinand. In a nutshell, the tactics were not working. The ageing veterans in defence could not trod up the pitch with their inability to turn back while dealing with pacy counter attacks. The whole Trafford faithfuls were gasping with a sense of qualm.
Suddenly rumours started circulating about Scholesy coming out of retirement. And then the gaffer confirmed it. But what could you say? Scholes was 37 years old and hadn't kicked a football for the last 6 months. It all seemed very rhetoric.
8th of January: The derby was set against Citizens, rising as powerful footballing giants, who would eventually go onto win that season. Scholes did not start the game but came as a substitue for about last 30 minutes. People were apprehensive. And why not? The first touch he had, he conceded the possesion in a crucial position. Was the gaffer's decision to re-call his old valiant soldier to services, too much reliant on the historical evidences? So much that he could not understand the fact that Scholes's skills have started to fade away over the years. Well anyways the decision seemed just a rhetoric one. But wait, that was only the first touch of a man making a comeback in a high tense derby. The second pass came a few minutes after. You would not fail to realize that the feets were settling in. In the shoes that he bought from a local store the other night. But yeah thats just a thing.
The rest of the match as it unfolded was all about Scholes and his class. He sat deep with the whole United team venturing into the enemy's terrirtory. It was like a master playing orchestra on a beautiful romantic eve with his team of cherished musicians and singers. The passes were crisp and seamless. Decisive and accurate. Patient and exquisite. Well ofcourse, he was the Sat Nav. He made an impact on that match and for the rest of the season, decisively.
This man was joined by Carrick and they formed a short lived but an amazing partnership for the rest of the season. United shifted to a possesion based football with Scholes marshalling the troops and feeding the ball from the centre of the pitch. For me it was a testament to a great player and a visionary manager, for atleast in the history of United. His numbers are astounding, comparable to anyone in the trait, but let us also talk about impacts like these.Trust me, there are many in his famed vigil. Club that with the appreciation he gathered over the years from the elite and contemporary legends of the game, and it just stamps upon the rare skills this man possesed. Let us ponder over the thought, that We do not understand it maybe.
At the least, IMHO over-rated is such a tarnishing word for a legend like him.
Happy Birthday Ginger Prince.
